La Paz which means "peace" in Spanish is the state capital of Baja California Sur. As the region's commercial, cultural and political center, La Paz is still a tranquil and very Mexican port, preserving a nostalgic "old Baja" atmosphere.
La Paz is arguably the ecotourism capital of Mexico, with deserted beaches, calm bays, and ecologically pristine offshore islands including Isla Espíritu, Isla Partida and Isla Cerralvo. The complex sea life, desert wildlife and plant life are truly astonishing. Professional outdoor guides, fishing and diving expeditions are in abundance to this region.
Surrounded by Sonoran desert, La Paz is set amid ancient laurel trees, coconut and date palms. The city's beautiful waterfront promenade, better known as the malecón with the most amazing red sunsets in all of Baja can be seen from many vantage points on the beach, as well as from street side restaurants and hotels throughout the town.
