A Mexican Christmas Story About A Very Special Dog

Mexican street dog

Everybody that comes into contact with this animal falls in love with her. Today she went to my stepson's school - all the kids wanted to pet her, everybody was amazed, they first asked if she was a wolf... as a bunch of children gathered round, but she just layed down and let them pet her, as "Chess" left two women asked if they could have her because she was so gentle at the school with everybody and never once panicked, but the free spirit she is, she just wondered back to her neighborhood that afternoon - which she has adopted.

But, the big problem in Mexican culture is that if you have female puppies they are usually either killed or turned out into the street, they are too expensive to keep (if they get pregnant or you get them fixed...) - while male dogs of course are let to run wild populating the country.

So for now, she will run free, and always have a place to stay in the neighborhood - everybody will watch out for her and we have enough surrogate families around that she will always have a home and food. Right now we are her central headquarters, she comes and goes as she pleases... she learns very fast and is quite a cleaver dog (street smart, if you will), although she has stolen an avocado or two and wants to play with the pots that our houseplants are in. But she is learning the rules, as are we... since she has adopted us.

La Especial Perrita de las Huertas

Adopted by a special dog - the neighborhood - our casa and a boy...

For 3 weeks a very special female mixed breed (german shepherd y sheep dog?) has made our neighborhood her home. Playing with other dogs and the children around the area, she is known from the main road in the center of town, down to the rio where we live. Many people have tried to adopt her but to no avail, she is a free spirit without a mean bone in her body. She protects the area from people who do not belong here - she hasn't met up with the mailman yet (we don't think), but with her friendly demeanor she will probably greet him as she does everybody else, with a warm welcome.

This past week she adopted our family, especially my stepson (who is nine...) he named her "Chess" because she is black and white like a chess board. The two of them go off and do damage to the neighborhood together, she loves playing in water, this is good and bad because she likes to go to the rio, but is just as happy trying to bite the water coming out of the garden hose. If my stepson doesn't want to go outside and play, she grabs him by the seat of his pants and tries to pull him out the door! Unfortunately we are not home alot and really cannot really have any pets, it would be unfair to the animal(s), but this dog is a very special case with a very unique demeanor.

We have been asking everybody in the neighborhood if they would like to have her because we cannot keep her and that is when we get these amazing stories from everyone about this wonderful perra. Everybody agrees that we should not get rid of her since she has finally picked a casa here to be her home, they are even volunteering to look after her while we are away on our trips - at least five different people have made this offer already! Some have even offered to help pay to get her fixed! The stories these people are telling us are amazing!

     • She eats breakfast with my two dogs almost every morning...
     • My dog won't eat unless she comes by, they share a plate together.
     • My kids love playing with her when she comes to visit.
     • She would sometimes sleep at my house at night...
     • She keeps panhandlers off my street.

"Chess" a special dog
If someday we find her no longer around, no matter what has become of her, we will always remember the wonderful gift that she gave to us all.
