"Read my blogs and lose 15 calories by doing
so..." Yes, it is true! Computer work will loose
you approximately 100 calories per hour, while watching TV only burns off 70
calories. Hell, even a nap will burn off 60 calories - almost as much as "moderate" sexual
activity or light kissing (70 calories)!
Why should we care you might be asking....? Well, I just thought it was a nicer subject to discuss than the Dirty War which Mexico was found guilty of in a "so-called" leaked document by the National Security Archive in Washington, D.C. (also available in Spanish for our amigos). After all, hundreds of students and civilians were tortured, killed or made to disappear during the early 1960's to the late 1970's and alot of families are still grieving over their missing family members. Amazing.... three Mexican Presidents either approved or just sat by and let this genocide happen!
And we thought the Aztecs were bad................

"Roses of the Prophet Muhammad..." ahhh,
don't you just love them? With their flaky dough and filled with sweet spices,
nuts, cheese and fruit...... HEY, isn't that what we used to call a "Danish" ?
Hmmm, not anymore in Iran - anything from Denmark is now banned over that "no big deal" political cartoon. Kinda reminds me of after 911 when the fries in the US stopped being French! Do they still have "Freedom Fries" up there in the good ol' USA, or have the French been forgiven? (as long as they leave those damn poodles at home)

"This week in Mexico..." U2
are in town for 2 nights in Mexico's City's large cavernous soccor stadium...
the Stones will be soon to follow. Presidente Fox has decided to take a pension
from Mexico when his term is up and he retires on December 1st, 2006 - Fox
said since he is turning 64 it will be hard to get another job..... yeah, right
- even Dan Quail is commanding big bucks on the speaking circuit, I think people
would pay to hear Fox speak. If not, the guy has money, has a large ranch and
his best buddy to the north might be able to give him a job clearing land on
his Texas ranch - whatta say Dubya?

"DNS blocking..." Sorry
for the delay in uploading the latest blogs... our ISP here in Mexico (the
only one available here until AT&T invades Mexico) had my DNS address blocked
on their servers (along with a few other websites) which blocked me from being
able to upload to the server and receive emails. But just for that account,
all of our other domains were fine??? Of course the ISP says they did nothing
and were not at fault... but the rest f the world was able to view the site,
just not if you were on TelMex's Prodigy system. I think Carlos Slim needs
to dig into his pockets and do some friendly ungrading or he is going to lose
half his business to AT&T when they come knocking.

"The embarrassment continues..." Why
does the US blindly think that no matter what country they are in that they
can enforce the rules and laws of the United States? If another country were
to 'try' and do that in the US do you think that they would get away
with it? ........hell no! But the US doesn't see this... or they are too above
everybody else to give a rat's ass. In the meantime they are making life tougher
and definitely more difficult for the American's that live in other countries
around the world! Almost makes me wish I were Canadian... I said "almost"..........
So now the US has a new problem with its neighbor to the south. Having Cubans kicked out of the Sheraton Hotel across the street from the Angel on Reforma Ave. in Mexico City was not only stupid, but took alot of cajones! Mexico had no problemas with that hotel until now... Mexico enjoyed the revenue - but now because of the expulsion of the Cuban's from the hotel because of the US' anti-everything with Cuba... Mexico has gone into the Sheraton and found enough violations (that they had let slide in the past) to close down one of Mexico City's most popular hotels for business clientel until the repairs are made and all permits legally satisfy the Mexican Government.
I sure wish somebody would remind Tony Garza, the US Embassador and all the other higher ups that you don't screw with Mexico, because Mexico gets even! And if they don't get even with the US government itself, they will retaliate against the US citizens living and working here.
Gracias...

"Not such a Super Bowl..." The 'numero
uno' disappointment here was not the game itself, but that we didn't get
ANY of those cool Super Bowl commmercials! Instead we got blasted with lame
political commercials (mainly by the PRI) from the candidates running for Mexico's
Presidency. Topping it all off was a halftime show by a bunch of old geezers
(oops, I guess everybody got to see that part, not just Mexico.... I thought
it was a promo for the Stones coming to Mexico City next week!) - where is Janet
Jackson and her nipples when we need them! Well now the Seahawks can go
back home and sip their lattes, while the winners can go back home to the mines
- 2 veteran coaches and (what seemed like) 2 teams with the Super Bowl jitters.
Now back to the second half of the NBA basketball season!

"Border friction spilling south..." First
Mexico starts handing out maps to help illegals cross the border and stay alive
once they get over to the US side of the borders (was a pretty good map too
- water areas, shelter, even areas with celular phone reception!), then they
were informed that "hey, that is a good way to get these poor people
robbed and maybe even killed if some anti-immigrant groups get ahold of these
maps....." no chit! This idea was worse than last year's comic book
version of how to cross the borders safely.
Now
the US has been finding alot of tunnels this month and this is going to continue
if they build the wall. I talked to my Mexican amigos over the Navidad holidays,
they say this is their only real worry about the wall going up - a lot of
tunnels are going to be discovered or made unsafe and could collapse on people
using them to head north. Now, most of the guys I talked to have permits
and work at full time construction jobs in Texas... but they are worried
about their families and friends who are going across for the first time,
they will be taking those tunnels.
Tear down the wall... those millions of dollars could go to a much more needed cause - like the suicidal refugees from Hurricane Katrina ...does anybody remember them?

"More security in place for 2006..." Just
got back from the bus station - they now have Escorpion tactical squads in
the parking lot watching for suspicious people and vehicles... and guess what,
you can't play ignorant gringo, they speak perfect English! Glad to have them
here, the buses are always a possible danger zone with bandits are robberies.
My first year in Mexico I was baptised into the bus bandito scene with a knife
at my throat and a guy at the front of the bus with a gun on a ten year old
girl... then away they ran across a field escaping with everybodys money and
valuables.
Mexico's Presidential Race formally began this week and just like the past two elections in the US, there is nobody here qualified to run. Two have some good ideas and some qualifications and the third just has the priviledge on being from Mexico's most stable and strongest political party over the past 70 years. Gonna be an entertaining show!

"New space fruit arrives from the US..." Don't
know who's idea this was, but Soriana stores here (owned by Walmart) are carrying
a newly packaged fruit imported from the US. What bothers me more than the
bizarreness of the hard plastic package, is the excessive - non-biodegradable
material that is just adding to Mexico's trash problem... what genius invented
this space capsule for fruit ???
Speaking of food... look who stopped by the local McDonald's on his march through Mexico Delegate Zero , better known as Subcommander Marcos. We are eagerly awaiting Marcos and his entourage as they come through Queretaro at the end of February.

"Day of the Magic Kings..." Today
millions of Mexican children received gifts from the Three Wise Men - no....
not Manny, Moe and Jack - Gaspar, Melchor and Baltazar. Known as el "Día
de Los Reyes Magico", the day commemorates the arrival in Bethlehem
of the Three Wise Men, who were said to have been astronomers. They had been
following a bright star across the desert to the place where they would find
the Christ Child (you know the story...).
While Christmas still remains the most important day of this holiday season, in the small towns Three Kings Day remains numero uno dia for the children. Tradition dictates that they write a letter to the Kings asking for special gifts and leave the letter the night before in an old shoe, under a bed. And in the ranches some children also leave water and hay outside their casas for the wise men´s camels.
My favorite part is the Rosca de Reyes sweet bread - I wait all year for this pancito! It is baked with one or more plastic baby dolls inside (years ago they were made of porcelain), and has slices of candies fruit on top. You have to be careful cutting into the rosca, for if you find a doll in your piece or cut into one of those plastic buggers you have to host a tamale party on Feb. 2nd, "Día de la Candelaría".

"I'm back for another year..." I
hope........................ 2006 seems to be getting off to a real bang so
far this new year. Just got my van back from the mechanic today - blew a tire
on Christmas day, which turned into a loose pulley and a frayed fan belt...
and since Mexico has been closed this past week we were unable to get a new
pulley until today. We are very lucky to have a couple of REAL mechanics here
that know what they are doing... the owner trained in New York for 6 years
and his head mechanic with a great feel for motors - forget the manual, this
guy is truly gifted.
Other great bangs for the new year...??? Hmmm, let's see... the tired US military possibly getting ready to bomb Iran with the blessings of their Middle Eastern neighbors? Mount St. Helens possibly getting ready to spew forth again up Seattle way - I hope my amigos up there are gonna be safe! Subcommandor Marcos and the Zapatistas have come out of the jungles and are touring the country for peace (Marcos via motorcycle - just like Che!) during Mexico's new election year.
But the biggest bang at the moment might result from yesterday's killing of a Mexican national as he hopped the fence and was supposedly shot in the chest by the Border Patrol and later died in a TJ hospital after being dragged by his amigos back across the border into Tijuana. If this turns out to be true, there is gonna be some big shit happening guaranteed.
Mexicans don't get mad, they get even!
